Technology Workshop

In response to the devastating effect of the pandemic, FSCBC ventured into addressing the effects of social isolation on our seniors, experiencing extreme loneliness and sometimes to the point of depression beyond the “cabin fever syndrome”. The project? Exploring via Social Media! The answer? - We were thrilled to receive a grant from the Federal Government’s “New Horizons Seniors Program”. This grant afforded us the opportunity to conduct a two-week intensive social media training for 20 core participant seniors. This came with the purchase of 20 iPads for the use of the participants.

Digital experts led hands-on training sessions, walking participants through the basics of navigating the home screen, using a variety of apps, and staying connected with loved ones through video calls. Our members were able to learn in a comfortable and supportive environment and were provided one-on-one support as needed.

The result? Our seniors crossed the barrier of the intimidating fear of social media by venturing into the use of FB messenger to connect with friends, loved ones, and new friends. Personal emails, as well as the use of Zoom for ongoing zoom meetings, regular senior-friendly dancercise, workshops, and related activities. The workshop was a great success, with many participants expressing excitement and confidence in their newfound ability to use the iPad in their daily lives. We look forward to continuing to support seniors in learning and adapting to the latest digital hardware and software.
